The rainbow boa gets its name for the beautiful rainbow iridescence that shimmers when their scales receive sunlight. The most commonly kept and bred rainbow boas come from either Brazil or Columbia, with the more colorful and vibrant variations typically seen in the Brazilian morphs. In the wild, Argentine are considered to be some of the most beautiful in the world. Rainbow boas have been extensively bred in the pet industry and can be found in variations from wild type (a brownish red) to brilliant hues of vibrant orange and red, some costing thousands of dollars.
Like the tropics from which they hail, Rainbow boas like a lot of humidity and heat, however many can be sensitive to prolonged excessively high temperatures of 90*+. To maintain humidity their enclosure should be misted daily. One of the most common health issues with rainbow boas is too low of humidity, often marked by incomplete or irregular shedding. To assist with this, they need to be provided with a large water dish, one big enough for the snake to soak itself completely. Rainbow boas are largely a nocturnal species, but like many nocturnal species, they will venture out at dusk to feed and absorb small amounts of UV rays during this time. This is why we suggest a UVB bulb be used for a few hours before sunset each day to mimic these conditions at home. To maximize the visible Rainbow iridescence a fluorescent light can be used as well.
